How I Got Involved in Letterpress Printing: I
was first introduced to letterpress printing by Elsi Vassdal Ellis while studying Graphic Design at Western Washington University.
It was the Vandercook proofpress that first got me started printing, doing a set of stationary, and a few linocuts, it was the physical
act of printing ( a welcomed change of pace from the computer) that got me hooked. Elsie's books' creative, technical and political
power are still an inspriation to me today.
I continued my letterpress exploration by studying with Christopher Stern and Jules
Remedios Faye at Stern & Faye Printers in Sedro Wolley Washington- Thier warmth, insistence on excellence, and generosity went
a long way in teaching me the fine art of presswork. Not nearly enough can be said about their passion for fine presswork, and I hope
that I will be able to carry a bit of Chris' curmudgeonry and eye for detail with me always.
Having grown up around my Dad's
a machine shop, I was instantly at ease with the machinery, and have since collected, repaired and restored many presses, a select
few of which are still with me. My printing is primarily for personal interest, however I do the occasional freelance printing.
Just
doing my part to continue the art of printing.
